New Pulp Best Seller List (Based on Amazon Sales Ranks 2/27/12)

It’s that time again! Before I unveil the Top Ten, let’s go over a few of the ground rules, shall we? Those of you who have been keeping up with the list for awhile will notice a few changes in how I’m doing the list!

1) This list only tracks sales through AMAZON. It does not keep track of sales through Barnes and Noble, face-to-face or anything else!
2) This list only tracks PRINT sales. We do not currently track e-books. Exactly how Amazon calculates those things is mostly a trade secret and they vary wildly from day to day. If I checked this tomorrow, the list could be very different. This list reflects sales ranks as of Monday February 27, 2012.
3) In order to keep the focus on new releases, eligible works must have been published within three months of the current date. So, since this list is being done in February 2012, I’m only looking at books published since November 2011. Please keep that in mind before complaining that Title X is not listed.
4) I am no longer tracking pre-release orders. Some publishers never actually release their books and when they do, it’s months after they were supposed to be released. Everything listed in the Top Ten is currently for sale.
5) I am human. I make mistakes. If you are aware of a title that should be listed below (keeping in mind all the rules above), please let me know and I will make sure to remedy the situation.

Expect the list to look very different next week as several titles fall off our three-month eligibility qualifier (since our next report will be in March) and Airship 27 should have at least one new release by then. This time around, Airship 27 retains three spots in the top ten (#4, 8 & 9), giving them the most titles in the list. The Richard Knight book from Pro Se moves up to # 5 this week while their new release (Global Star) has a strong debut at # 6. Both Dodge Dalton and Challenger Storm continue to show strong sales and are definitely worthy of a special mention.

The big guns remain locked in at # 1 & 2. After that, you have something interesting developing as Airship 27 and Pro Se Press definitely seem to be the biggest of the smaller press New Pulp publishers, with Airship staking out spots 3, 5 & 6, while Pro Se comes in at 8 & 9, along with two books that just miss cracking the top ten.

Special mention has to go out to Seven Realms’ new Dodge Dalton book, which is providing a very strong showing.

PULP ARK 2012 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT WINNER ANNOUNCED

As first announced on PULPED (www.pulped.libsyn.com) today, the Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient for 2012 has been selected. Tommy Hancock, partner in Pro Se Productions, the sponsor of PULP ARK, the Official New Pulp Convention as well as the founder and organizer of Pulp Ark, reported to PULPED! host Ron Fortier that the selection process for the Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2011, had been completed and a recipient named.

Although 11 other Pulp Ark Awards that will be given at Pulp Ark 2012 were selected by public nomination and then voting of those who nominated, the process for selecting the Lifetime Achievement winner was different. Ten people considered to be involved in the New Pulp Movement significantly at this point were invited to participate on the Lifetime Achievement Selection Committee. Each of these Committee members were given an opportunity to nominate three people for the Award. The top three from these nominations were then placed on a ballot and the Committee voted from that ballot. The members of the Committee included, Hancock, Barry Reese, Derrick Ferguson, Ron Fortier, Bobby Nash, Art Sippo, Van Plexico, Matt Moring, Michael Brown, and Joe Gentile.

To qualify for the recognition, a person must have been heavily involved in Pulp in some capacity significantly for at least ten years and had a known impact on Pulp. According to Hancock, the recipient of this year's Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award is Howard Hopkins.

Known for his ability to work in multiple genres as well as his absolute love for all things Pulp, Howard first came to the notice of many Pulp fans as the publisher of Golden Perils, one of the first and premier Pulp fanzines. Hopkins' publishing career involved many stories in many genres and included him working not only as a writer, but as a Pulp historian and an Editor.

This award will be given posthumously as Hopkins passed away suddenly on January 12, 2012. "This recognition," Hancock acknowledged, "is well deserved. Nominated last year, Howard was the fifth highest nominated in 2011 for the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. One needs simply to look at the voluminous list of fiction as well as non fiction and editing Howard did to see that this award is the least that he is worthy of. Many of us have learned how to better our craft because of Howard. And we will continue to learn from him for years to come."

The award will be given to Howard's wife, Dominique, on her husband's behalf. The Awards Ceremony will be held during Pulp Ark 2012 on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

PULP OBSCURA ADDS CHARACTERS FROM PULP'S GREATEST AUTHOR!

Pro Se Productions, an up and coming Publisher in the New Pulp field and known for original characters, announces today an exciting addition to its first foray into classic Pulp characters, the PULP OBSCURA line.

As previously announced, Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, the premier producer of Pulp Reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, will be producing collections of New Pulp tales based on characters that Altus is reprinting. These characters will not necessarily be the better-known Pulp characters, but rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from Pulp’s Golden Era. Although many of these characters, such as Richard Knight, the aviator hero featured in the first PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the Public Domain, Pro Se reveals today that not only will there be volumes of PULP OBSCURA involving characters requiring permission and licensing to use, but the two characters currently in question were created by possibly the best known and respected Classic Pulp Author ever.

“Pro Se is absolutely proud,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions stated, “to be able to say that with the sanction of the representative of the heirs of Norma Dent, PULP OBSCURA will include collections featuring brand new tales written by modern writers of two heroes created and originally written by Lester Dent.”

Later in 2012, Altus Press has plans to reprint the original stories written by Lester Dent of two of his characters, both falling into the ‘gadget detective’ category, a particular niche that Dent often wrote in and one that definitely carried over into his Doc Savage stories. These two characters, Foster Fade, the Crime Spectacularist and Lynn Lash will appear in Altus reprint editions and will also appear in anthologies of New Pulp tales featuring the characters as companion volumes to the Altus reprints.

“I can’t really express,” Hancock said, “how absolutely cool it is to be able to be a part of bringing two classic Dent characters back to life in a sense. Although some Pulp Fans, particularly Dent devotees, are aware of Fade and Lash, they are largely unknown characters to many readers today. To be able to not only have their original adventures in print again with Altus Press, but to also be producing and creating brand new stories to continue where Mr. Dent left off and to bring awareness to not just these characters, but to the wonderful variety of characters that still live from the Pulp Age as well as the lesser known work of Dent himself, its simply astounding for me to even be associated with it.”

Although definite dates for publishing have not been established, Hancock stated that recruiting the writers for the first two anthologies, one featuring each character, would begin immediately and would follow the same standard applied to previous PULP OBSCURA titles. Anyone interested in having the opportunity to propose a tale for either THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE, THE CRIME SPECTACULARIST VOLUME ONE or THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH VOLUME ONE simply needs to email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net. Those interested will then, according to Hancock, be given an opportunity to make proposals in the coming days.

“This concept,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se, “is really the brainchild of Altus Press’ founder and publisher, Matt Moring. He saw the potential in many of the characters he plans to reprint the original adventures of via Altus Press to be used in new stories by modern day writers. Out of that rose PULP OBSCURA, a name I’d come up with a year or so ago out of my own thoughts of one day focusing on rare characters that most people, even the hardcore Pulp fans, don’t know exist.”

The first PULP OBSCURA volume is THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT. The title character originally appeared in FLYING ACES Magazine in the 1930s and was written by Donald E. Keyhoe, an author known later in his career for his writing on UFOs. Appearing in numerous tales into the 1940s, Knight was considered a flying detective type, an agent of the government who used the cover of millionaire flyboy to investigate plots, usually those involving things such as lost valleys or other oddities, against America.

PULP ARK 2012 AWARD NOMINATIONS CLOSED, VOTING HAS BEGUN!

Tommy Hancock, Pulp Ark Coordinator, announced the end of nominations and the release of the ballot for the second Pulp Ark Awards to be given out at Pulp Ark 2012 in Batesville, AR, April 20-22, 2012.

"We had a fantastic turn out in terms of nominations again this year," Hancock stated. "More than 25 publishers represented across the board, this is a ballot that truly reflects not only the popularity that Pulp has today, but also the variety and creativity within the field."

Listed below is the Ballot qualified voters received today. Only those who nominated a work or individual in one of the categories are qualified to vote. Voting will end on February 20, 2012 with winners announced soon after.

If you did nominate someone and did not receive a ballot, please email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net and this will be corrected.

There will also be a Pulp Ark 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award given. This will be selected by a committee already chosen and results will be announced on or before February 21, 2012.

Pro Se Productions, Publisher of the monthly New Pulp Magazine PRO SE PRESENTS, announced today its magazine lineup for the first quarter of 2012! This lineup includes not only works from multiple writers, both new and familiar to New Pulp fans, but also features the first collaboration between Pro Se and noted New Pulp Publisher, White Rocket Books!

“Pro Se is ecstatic,” Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of and Partner in Pro Se Productions, stated today, “to be working with White Rocket Books and especially its owner and premier writer, Van Allen Plexico. Known as one of the leading New Pulp writers today and able to bridge nearly any genre, Van brings a special touch to anything he writes and creates. For Pro Se to be able to give Van a vehicle to showcase his latest upcoming work HAWK in a monthly magazine format is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

HAWK: HAND OF THE MACHINE is a stand-alone piece including an excerpt from Plexico’s HAWK novel, to be published by White Rocket Books in 2012, reworked to be a story all its own. It spotlights the title character, a member of a force of protectors of space and its galaxies and planets. PRO SE PLANS FOR PULP POETRY IN 2012!

Pro Se Productions, a Publisher known to be on the cutting edge of New Pulp, announces an ambitious new project today that, if successful in 2012, will lead to a new imprint from Pro Se in 2013.

According to Tommy Hancock, Editor-in Chief and Partner in Pro Se, “Being a Publisher of both books and magazines, Pro Se obviously gets quite a few queries. One of the very first we got upon announcing we would be publishing Pulp magazines back in 2010 concerned whether or not we were interested in something described as ‘Pulp, but poetry instead of prose.’ At the time, we weren’t, but that hasn’t stopped the queries from coming in, at least one every week to two weeks about whether or not we’ll accept crime poetry, space poetry, fantasy poetry, and so on. Well, after a year and a half of requests as well as research and study, Pro Se has decided to test the waters via our magazine, PRO SE PRESENTS, by having an all Pulp Poetry volume.”

When asked to define Pulp Poetry, Hancock stated, “Well, if there’s a definition out there that is clear cut as to what it is, I haven’t found it. Pulp writers, most notably Robert E. Howard, have been known for their poetry as well. Defining Pulp is subjective often anyway and that is something it has in common with Poetry. Basically what we’re looking for is poetry that deals with subjects and genres that are a part of Pulp. So, action, adventure, heroes and villains, conflict, and genre. Genre is important in determining Pulp Poetry. Pulp is all about genre, be it western, crime, fantasy, and so on. So, Pulp Poetry definitely has to be something that deals in a particular genre that is a part of Pulp.”

As far as other requirements for Pulp Poetry, there are no requirements that it rhyme or be a certain length. Hancock stated that submissions would be open from January 2^nd to March 1^st 2012 for poems to be included in this volume.

The May 2012 issue of PRO SE PRESENTS, the tenth issue of the magazine, will be an all Pulp Poetry issue, edited by newly appointed Pulp Poetry Editor for Pro Se, Megan Smith.

“I have been writing Poetry,” Smith explained, “since I was little. I can't remember a time when I didn't enjoy writing it or reading it. There has always been an interest in Poetry and with the increase in the interest in Pulp in the last several years, it seems the perfect time to show the world what Pulp Poetry can be.”

Currently the only Pulp Poetry title on the Pro Se Schedule is the special magazine issue scheduled for May 2012. Smith will serve as editor of Pulp Poetry regardless of the form it continues in, either as a continual part of the magazine format on a monthly basis or as its own line with Pulp Poetry collections in 2013.

“This,” Hancock pointed out, “is an experiment, but it’s one we have full faith in. Pulp is known for being speculative and a field of literature where anything can happen. The concept of Pulp Poetry fits perfectly and just wait and see what Pro Se does with it.”

PRO SE ANNOUNCES NEW STAFF ADDITIONS FOR 2012!

Pro Se Productions, known for its quality books and magazines since coming on the New Pulp scene in 2010, announced today that due to the company’s past success as well as ambitious plans for 2012 and beyond, new positions have been added to the Pro Se Productions staff roster.

“In order to,” Tommy Hancock, Partner and Editor in Chief of Pro Se stated, “not only continue to produce at the quality and level we have been, but to continually improve and exceed that, it has become necessary to spread the work around a bit. Fortunately there are those who support and believe in Pro Se’s goal of providing the best possible New Pulp fiction it can that have agreed to fill these positions. They are no strangers to the company and have proven themselves in various other capacities, mostly as writers. In at least one instance, we are finally giving a title to someone who Pro Se would not be what it is today without.”

The new staffers and their positions are as follows, according to Hancock-

Director of Art and Design- Sean E. Ali. Hancock said, “This is a position that Sean has had with me since long before Pro Se existed, along with several others like sounding board, critic, friend, and others. Sean is one of the best designers in New Pulp today and proves that by upping his game with every single new work Pro Se puts out.”

EBook Format and Design Consultant-Russ Anderson. According to Hancock, “Russ is a godsend in that this is a direction Pro Se has been aimed at for a while. Now we’re able to pull the trigger and Russ is firing out our eBook versions at a good clip and great quality as well.”

Assistant Editor-Nancy Hansen. Hancock stated, “I can’t put into words what sort of support Nancy has been as well as the fact that she is one of the most prolific and consistent writers I know. And there comes a time when the right person presents himself or herself to any EIC that he has to say ‘It’s time to share.’ It’s way past time that I finally took Nancy up on all her offers to help and could think of no one better to assist me.”

Copy Editor-Don Thomas. As Hancock put it, “Pro Se looks to continually improve and editing is one area where every single publishing company in the world can always do better. As a part of that we’ve brought on editors to handle specific duties. Don has been with Pro Se since before our first magazine hit the stands and has a commitment not only to Pro Se, but also to New Pulp. Handling spelling, grammar, and other basic copyediting is something he has already tackled with dedication and persistence. “

Magazine Editor in Chief -Lee Houston, Jr. Hancock reported, “Again one of those who has been with Pro Se since our first call for writers, Lee is an amazing individual. He tackles every project with excitement and passion and wants only the best from himself and Pro Se. He definitely displayed a great work ethic as a writer and as a genre magazine editor and has already brought that level of ability and dedication to this new position.” Houston oversees Thomas’ work on the magazine as well as Frank Schildiner, magazine editor. “Frank,” Hancock added, “is a top hand and continues to prove an asset to Pro Se’s magazine line, especially now that we have streamlined it to one title.”

Pulp Poetry Editor-Megan Smith. “This,” Hancock explains, “is a position that we created for two reasons. One is we get more requests than you would think for poetry, both in book and magazine form. One of the first queries we got was whether or not we published crime poetry. We didn’t then, but now we want to. The other reason is we have the person perfect to head up this potential new line already working with Pro Se. Megan is an up and coming writer, known primarily for Perry Lell from Pro Se as well as giving her face and skills to The Pulptress, a spokesmodel for Pro Se and New Pulp. Megan is also a fantastic poet and her real passion lies in working with others interested in that.” More details will follow, according to Hancock, but there will be at least one magazine issue devoted exclusively to Pulp Poetry from Pro Se this year with Smith at the helm.

Other staff members already working with Pro Se include Hancock (Partner and Editor in Chief), Fuller Bumpers (Partner and Chief Executive Officer), and Barry Reese (Submissions Editor).

“These additions,” Hancock noted, “are not simply to look like we’re bigger than we are. Pro Se has literally grown tremendously in the last year and these positions have become necessary. We are also considering other positions as well, related primarily to marketing and promotions, but that’s an ongoing process.”

Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, and Altus Press, the foremost Publisher of quality Pulp reprints and new works such as THE WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE, announced a partnership in November and revealed today specifics to what has become known as the PULP OBSCURA Imprint.

The concept behind Pulp Obscura is that Altus Press and Pro Se Press will work in conjunction to produce related products. When Altus Press publishes specially selected titles featuring rare and largely forgotten Pulp characters’ original stories, Pro Se will bring together the best writers of New Pulp today and simultaneously release a collection of newly written tales starring the same character. This stunning partnership will showcase both the classic adventures of some of pulp's lost treasures while simultaneously allowing New Pulp's finest to bring those characters back to life.

“This,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is no easy task. First to provide New Pulp stories, brand new exciting adventures of rare classic Pulp Characters and to coordinate that with Altus Press. But then finding the right creators, the authors who can breathe new life into these concepts and on top of that, deciding and planning which books will come out in the coming year. It’s a heck of a task and one that has been rewarding on so many levels.”

Thirteen books in the Pulp Obscura line from Pro Se have been planned. At least eight of these will be timed to release simultaneously with the reprinted adventures of the same characters as produced by Altus Press. Five more will be published by Pro Se that will feature characters Altus Press has already published the available adventures of in the past.

Beginning in February, Altus Press and Pro Se Productions will work in conjunction to produce related products. When Altus Press publishes specially selected titles featuring rare and largely forgotten Pulp characters’ original stories, Pro Se will bring together the best writers of New Pulp today and simultaneously release a collection of newly written tales starring the same character. This stunning partnership will showcase both the classic adventures of some of pulp's lost treasures while simultaneously allowing New Pulp's finest to bring those characters back to life.

“For a long time, I thought there was a good opportunity to simultaneously release classic pulp reprints and a companion volume of new stories featuring that same character. These are solid, well-rounded characters who have tons of untapped potential. I'm glad to see there are plans afoot to take advantage of this and utilize two companies' joint promotions towards a common complimentary product,” notes Altus Press' Publisher Matt Moring.

This is,” said Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “an honor and privilege for both me personally and Pro Se. Working with Matt and Altus Press to provide complimentary material to the great work he is already doing is simply a good move forward for Pro Se. And I am such a fan of the obscure, lesser known, even totally forgotten characters of Pulp that this project is already one of my favorites and it’s just a few days old.”

Beginning with the first cooperative publication in February, Pro Se will initiate a new imprint. PULP OBSCURA will be the title of the line and will feature a logo and other graphics highlighting the relationship between Pro Se and Altus Press. Both companies will provide various forms of cross promotion as well for the complimentary releases.

“Pro Se,” Hancock commented, “has largely stayed out of the Public Domain market as far as New Pulp goes because many publishers are doing the better known characters and doing them well. We’ve been looking for something different, something that makes Pro Se distinctive in this field. PULP OBSCURA, shining the talent of writers and creators on the little or completely unknown heroes and villains of Classic Pulp, makes that distinction.”

Pro Se Press will publish a New Pulp collection each time Altus Press produces a new reprint collection that both companies consider appropriate for the PULP OBSCURA treatment. Pro Se, with the encouragement of Altus Press, will also be exploring Altus Press’ catalog and be publishing New Pulp collections of previously published reprints that will have no future volumes.

The first PULP OBSCURA related project will be THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE written by Donald E. Keyhoe to be released from Altus Press in February. Best known for writing the adventures of Philip Strange, UFO legend Donald E. Keyhoe also wrote another long-running aerial hero for the pages of FLYING ACES: Richard Knight. This collection will include the first four stories from this series, tales that mix in elements of lost races, dinosaurs and more!

Also in February, Pro Se will simultaneously release THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE as the debut title in its Pulp Obscura line. Based on the stories included in Altus Press’ volume, six writers will write Knight as he wings into all new dangers, startling mysteries, and discoveries that may very well change the world!

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR PULP ARK 2012 AWARDS!!!!!

Nominations for the PULP ARK Awards are now open and will close January 15^th, 2012. The awards are given in conjunction with Pulp Ark, the convention/creators' conference and the official New Pulp Convention to be held in Batesville, AR, April 20-22, 2012! The Awards are given for excellence in the field of Pulp, including books, stories, comic books, magazines, and characters as well as creators.

To determine if a work or creator qualifies for these awards the definition for works that qualify is as follows-New Pulp is fast-paced, plot-oriented storytelling of a linear nature with clearly defined, larger than life protagonists and antagonists, creative descriptions, clever use of turns of phrase and other aspects of writing that add to the intensity and pacing of the story.

Tommy Hancock, Coordinator of Pulp Ark explains additions to the Awards this year. “We have,” Hancock stated, “added two awards, both by popular requests and thanks to our donor who supports and provides the awards. Best Book has now been broken into two separate awards-Best Novel and Best Collection/Anthology. Also, there is now a category for Best New Character. This can include any New Pulp character created in 2011.”

Hancock also states, “We will also give a Lifetime Achievement Award again this year as well. A Ten Person committee selected from well-known Creators in New Pulp currently will decide the recipient of this award. This award is given to someone who has contributed to Pulp, not simply New Pulp, but to the continuation of the interest and promotion of Pulp in all its forms.” Last year’s winners of the first Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award were Tom and Ginger Johnson.

The only works eligible for the Pulp Ark 2012 Awards are those produced between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011. Pro Se Productions and Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief/Partner in Pro Se and Author of the novel YESTERYEAR, announced today that a series of stories set in the YesterYear universe Hancock created in his novel would be debuting on November 4th from iPulpFiction!

www.iPulpFiction.com is the brainchild of Keith Shaw and is a venue where short stories, both Classic and New Pulp, appear as individual tales and can be downloaded and enjoyed at extremely reasonable prices. "This," Hancock stated, "relationship with iPulpFiction is a natural fit for Pro Se, but especially for TALES OF YESTERYEAR (the name of the series of short stories from Hancock to appear on the site). PRO SE PRODUCTIONS announces today that PULP ARK 2012, The Official New Pulp Convention, will be held April 20-22, 2012. PULP ARK will be held once again in the scenic Ozark Mountains in Batesville, Arkansas, a town with a rich history and full of life all its own that sets it apart from other small town venues. PULP ARK 2012 will be held at the Independence County Fairgrounds in Batesville with ample room for vendors, guests, panels, and multiple outside activities!

"This is our second year," Tommy Hancock, PULP ARK Founder and Coordinator states, "and even though our first year was in many ways indicative of the first year of anything, we actually have quite a lot to live up to. PULPTACULAR | Pro Se

Last week we kicked off our tour of the New Pulp world with a look at Airship 27, the publishing company run by Ron Fortier, one of New Pulp’s most prominent voices. This week, we’re exploring Pro Se Productions, the company run by Tommy Hancock, the person who most personifies the New Pulp movement for me.

Tommy’s not only heavily involved with the site you’re visiting right now, he’s also one of the leading voices in the All Pulp news blog, lead host on the Pulped podcast, and Marketing and Promotions Coordinator for Moonstone, another pulp publisher we’ll be getting to down the road. First though I wanted to find out more about Pro Se, the company where Tommy serves as Editor-in-Chief of the pulp line.

Michael: Tommy, what led you to start your business? What was missing that you wanted to provide?

Tommy: Actually, Pro Se was already a business when I was brought into it. Its founder and my partner, Fuller Bumpers, has a background in TV and film, both as an actor and writer, and when he moved back to his wife’s hometown in Arkansas, he wanted to do something to keep that creative side going, as well as create a business involving the things he liked. Turns out that his wife’s hometown is also my hometown, Batesville, a place I work in quite a bit. Fuller and I cross paths frequently in our day jobs and as we got to know each other, he told me about his company and things he wanted to do and brought me in that way.

When I joined Pro Se, we were looking for our niche; the medium by which we could make a name for ourselves, be as creative as possible, and hopefully expand into what we do on an everyday basis. We produced some audio shows, talked about short films and plays, but really the push from the get-go always had to do with writing. We’re both writers and find our greatest passion there. With that in mind, I brought up the New Pulp field as a direction to go, one I was already involved with as a writer. We recruited writers and artists, went to work, and here we are at the end of our first publishing year.

I’m not sure that anything was exactly missing; we didn’t come into New Pulp to necessarily fill a gap. It was more about being one of the building blocks of something, a form of literature – a movement really – that appealed to us more than anything. We wanted to be a proving ground for new creators and we have definitely been that. We wanted to do stories that pushed Pulp boundaries without breaking them and we’ve succeeded in that way. We’ve become a place where known New Pulp authors feel comfortable imparting a tale or two and that’s really cool as well.

Michael: What differentiates Pro Se from other New Pulp publishers?

Tommy: Probably the thing that stands out is that we’ve focused almost exclusively on original characters. There’s been a Public Domain-type or three pop up here and there (and there’ll likely be more), but Pro Se’s push has been for stories and books focused on newly created characters that fall into a genre and character-type that fit squarely with standards set by the writers of the classic pulps and are carried forward today by the creators of New Pulp.

We’re also, as I said before, known for introducing a lot of great authors and artists to the New Pulp field that really haven’t broken in any other way: Nancy Hansen, Ken Janssens, Lee Houston Jr, Pete Cooper, David Russell, and the list goes on and on. It’s really been amazing to me since Pro Se has jumped feet first into New Pulp how many of our creators and supporters, both people who got their start with us as well as some fairly well-established New Pulp creators, have commented that Pro Se is like a creative family for them. We are definitely a business as well, but I think it says something when the people who work for a company consider it more than that.

Michael: Where’d the name Pro Se come from?

Tommy: This goes back to Fuller, my partner. He is, by day, an attorney and the term pro se is a legal one. It refers to when someone chooses to defend themselves in a legal action, so basically it means “do it yourself.” Not really a wise choice in any court of law honestly, but the meaning and the ring of it works well for a publishing company.

Michael: The first thing I noticed when I saw it was that when you put the two words together they make “prose.” Was that an intentional word play as well?

Tommy: It wasn’t intentional because originally the company was going to be doing audio and film production. When we made the switch to publishing, our name became sort of a happy accident.

Michael: Which one Pro Se title do you recommend for someone who’s never read one of your books? Where’s the perfect place to start to get an accurate feel for what Pro Se represents?

Tommy: This is a bit difficult to answer because Pro Se produces books and magazines. We have twelve titles available currently, that’s an average of one a month in our first publishing year, and will continue to do that, one of our slogans being “Putting the Monthly Back Into Pulp!” Another thing that makes this difficult is that Pro Se isn’t just about the writer and the artist, but we have an awesome designer in the person of Sean Ali who has turned out some truly awesome work in terms of format and design.

From the magazine perspective, a good representation of just how varied Pro Se is can be found in Pro Se Presents #1, our relaunch of our magazine line this past August. And as far as a good example of what Pro Se does book-wise, any of our first three books (Yesteryear, The Rook Volume Six, and Fortune’s Pawn) would be good starting points.

But there’s one that will likely be available by the time this posts that is truly a seminal work for Pro Se on all levels and sets the standard for what is to come. The Adventures of Lazarus Gray, written by Barry Reese, is a short-story collection spotlighting a character Barry created for Pro Se’sSovereign City Project, a shared universe concept. Everything about this book is spot on: the stories, the characters, the style, the art, the format and design. This is a New Pulp tale done completely right.

Michael: Let’s say someone has enjoyed every Pro Se title available and is still craving more like it. What classic pulp would you suggest he or she read that would be comparable to yours?

Tommy: Pro Se covers such a wide variety of genres and such with its work, especially in our magazines. We have fantasy covered, so Robert E. Howard comes to mind. Definitely, we have masked vigilantes and hero types, so that brings in classic hero pulps. We’ve stepped squarely off into the horror and science fiction realms as well in the past. To be honest, Pro Se has such a fair representation of comparable genres that the pulp gamut is pretty well covered. I’d say just pick a classic pulp you like and there's likely comparable content at Pro Se.

If you Google Pro Se Productions, you’ll find a website that’s different from the one I linked to at the top of this article. As Tommy mentioned, the company does a lot more than publishing pulp stories, so for those interested in Pro Se’s New Pulp stuff, he recommends checking out the blog. That’s what I did and found all the books and magazines Tommy talked about.

As I’m building a reading list for myself though, one title particularly jumped out and that’s the last one Tommy brought up, The Adventures of Lazarus Gray. It has a little to do with Gray’s being an homage to the Avenger, one of the few, classic pulp heroes I know anything about. Mostly though, I love the idea of Pro Se’s creating a shared universe for itself. I’m a fan of Marvel and DC comics, but that’s not where my excitement for this concept comes from. For one thing, I think it’d be extremely hard – if not impossible – to replicate something as extensive as Marvel and DC’s universes in a series of novels and/or short stories. But there is a closer precedent for this kind of thing in the Thieves’ Worldbooks edited by Robert Lynn Asprin.

Thieves’ World was a series of fantasy anthologies all set in the shared city of Sanctuary. Science fiction and fantasy writers as noted as Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andrew Ouffet, Lynn Abbey, and Poul Anderson contributed short stories and shared characters. It was a lot of fun and I’ve always wanted to read something else like it. The Adventures of Lazarus Gray sounds like it could be the beginning of something like that and I want to be there to witness it as it gets going. Undoubtedly I’ll add other Pro Se books to my list, but that’ll be the first.
